The house showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley. Alexander Girard, the interior designer, infused the space with warmth and color, balancing the home’s geometric precision with vibrant textiles, furniture, and decorative items. A 50-foot storage wall, designed by Girard, showcases the Miller family’s eclectic collection of folk art and personal memorabilia, while custom-designed rugs and fabrics add layers of texture and interest to the space.

The conversation pit, suggested by Girard, remains one of the home’s most iconic features, eliminating clutter and emphasizing the architectural lines of the room. Eero Saarinen, a close friend of the Miller family, was tasked with creating a residence that would serve not only as a family home but also as a venue for entertaining luminaries from around the world. The result is a sprawling 6,838-square-foot testament to modernist architecture, one of the few single-family homes Saarinen ever designed.

His celebrity client list included Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Correll. And while he is mainly known for character homes dripping with detail his architectural prowess covered midcentury, Tudor-revival, French Chateau, Regency, French Country, and Mediterranean architecture. SAH Archipedia tells the story of the United States through its buildings, landscapes, and cities. This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. One of few single-family residences by the celebrated Finnish-American designer Eero Saarinen, the Miller House remains a key example of midcentury modern residential design.

According to metmuseum.org, the preliminary courses were taught by visual artists like Paul Klee, Vasily Kandinsky, and Josef Albers and included the study of materials, color theory, and formal relationships. Their single-story, rectangular-shaped abode surrounded by a terrazzo plinth has a long, low profile. The flat roof overhangs windows and walls of grey slate and white marble, a neutral look that’s replicated inside and still looks fresh today. While those with more ornate tastes might consider Miller House to be overly severe and stark, I see a work of art. Landscaping by Kiley is admired for its large geometric gardens and alley of honey locust trees, which run alon the west side of the house.

Editor-in-chief Kelsey Keith first visited the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, back in 2011. She returned for another peek this summer, while in town for Exhibit Columbus, a biennial that activates public space as an entree to all the town’s architectural treasures. “If we keep the train on the tracks, and we keep going forward and keep trying to advance the ball, as far as we can off the field every day incrementally we are going to grow that Republican majority, win the Senate, and win the White House back,” Johnson said.

Children under 10-years-old are not permitted on the tour (including infants and toddlers). Please note the Miller House and Garden is open by guided tour only and is not included in Free First Thursday. Before the event on Sunday, the Iowa Democratic party rebuffed Miller-Meeks’ event saying Johnson’s appearance was a reward for her support of party leadership. Johnson said he didn’t want to shut down the government because of the disruption it would cause, but also because it could result in Democrats utilizing the shutdown to campaign against Republicans jeopardizing their one-vote majority. After McCarthy was ousted, Republicans went through a host of senior House Republican leadership until Johnson was nominated and unanimously elected by House Republicans to lead the chamber.

"She was always calling Gene to try and place someone somewhere,” said Candace. “That was part of how he found people." "They were unable to do events at that time and he said I want to help people while I can,” said Chico Vice-Mayor Kasey Reynolds. “It is safer for people to be off the streets." "He took the mansion like his own place,” said Yolanda. “He never asked can I live there or nothing, yet he was living there." Rudy Enriquez, now a retired music manager, has refused to sell the property, though he has admitted to frequenting the site to feed his two cats who live there. The exterior of the mansion is in slow decay, and the local neighbors have had to pitch in to help maintain the property.

Miller House is one of the most important mid-century modern residences in the country, often mentioned alongside Fallingwater, The Glass House, and The Farnsworth House as America’s best examples of residential modernism. This hallmark of modern design showcases the talents of architect Eero Saarinen, designer Alexander Girard, and landscape architect Dan Kiley. As residences and commercial buildings in Los Angeles emerged with clean lines, open spaces, and an indoor-outdoor flow, modern furniture became en vogue.

Built in 1890, the house is considered to be a combination of Stick and Eastlake styles. The identity of the architect is not known, though some have attributed the design to Joseph Cather Newsom.[3] A short distance from the University of Southern California campus, the house is now used primarily for student housing. Once the home of Frank Sinatra, Clint Walker and then Roger Miller in the 1970s who raised his whole family here, this house is amazing with exceptional history that can be felt in every room! The hit song, King Of The Road was actually written by Roger Miller at the bar!

It was the first property to receive this designation while the building was still occupied by its original owners and while one of its designers (Kiley) was still alive. The Miller House and Garden is one of the country’s most significant examples of modernist design applied to a residential structure and its interior and landscape. Located a couple miles north of downtown Columbus, Indiana, it is one of many outstanding landmarks of modernist design in the neighborhood. Architectural historians have described it as one of the most innovative houses of the era. At the Miller House, however, Saarinen and Roche’s work follows the tradition of International Style modernism, with its flat roof, wide expanses of glass windows and slate walls that form a rectangular, open-plan structure.

On the property at 2185 Esplanade used to sit the Daniel Bidwell mansion, the half-brother of Chico's founder John, built in and around 1871. It was the second Bidwell Mansion that was dismantled, and now pieces of it decorate the current Miller Mansion. A year after the gruesome murder-suicide, the mansion was sold to a couple, Emily and Julian Enriquez, who only used the 5,050-square-foot house as a storage site. Neighbors recall seeing the couple bringing boxes to the mansion, but never staying overnight.
